Artists - Dan Mangan
February 26, 2008 | Filed Under Featured Artists |Bio: Late in 1995, Dan Mangan was in High School doing work experience at a local record distributor, Mushroom Distribution Services. A steady career in I.T was on the cards until one day Frank G, the man that Dan blames for everything ever since, handed him a pile of records and asked him if he had turntables. ‘No’ was Dan’s response. ‘Get some’ was Frank’s. Simple really…
Six years later, and due to having played a five-hour DJ set at an after-party with Triple J’s Sharif Galal present, Dan found himself being “unearthed” as part of the national broadcaster’s “Melbourne Unearthed.” His first ever club set was broadcast live from Revolver Nightclub in Prahran, Melbourne to half a million Australian listeners on Saturday night’s Mix Up show. The crowd reaction in the club was so good that Dan’s still convinced the dance floor consisted mainly of paid extras…
Since then, Dan hasn’t just established himself in Melbourne’s ever-growing scene; he’s grown to become one it’s leading DJ’s who’s sound can only be described as diverse as it is upfront. In the six short years he’s been DJ’ing around Melbourne and Australia, he’s been using his versatility and technical skill to warm up, hype up or wind up nights. He’s played to Festival crowds of up to 18,000 people, racked up (residencies) at club nights like Out Of Order, Fractured, Escape, Fuji, The Late Show, Broken Home, PreSSure, Quality Control, Q-Bar and Sunny, and built a seemingly endless list of international names he’s supported or provided warm up duties for.
Dan’s immediate circle includes export-grade talents of artists like Phil K, Luke Chable, Keltec, Nubreed, Andy Page and Sean Quinn: so learning from these artists by collaborating with each of them on different projects enabled Dan to gain rare insight into the production techniques of some of Australia’s finest dance music producers. He must have been paying attention, because his remix and production efforts have made their way to the public on labels like Artists Known As, 3Beat Breaks, Heavy Rotation, Vicious Vinyl, Muti Music, Audio Therapy and Trojan Records. A radio career was kick-started in June 2005, when Sean Quinn invited him to co-host a daily show on Melbourne’s freshly revived Kiss FM. Formerly known as the Clubber’s Breakfast, Space Between The Beats has been the station’s most popular show since day one. The music policy is the show’s foundation and it’s a simple one - the latest music, quality controlled by two of Melbourne’s most discerning DJ’s. Now 12 months on their guests throughout that time have included people like Dave Seaman, Nic Fanciulli, Trentemoller, Satoshi Tomiie, Carl Cox, Lee Burridge, M.A.N.D.Y, Infusion, Daniel Taylor, Paolo Mojo, Hernan Cattaneo, Meat Katie, Product.01, Tiefschwarz, DJ Shadow and that’s only getting started. If you’re in Melbourne, tune hard left to 87.6 on your FM dial or listen to the station’s Live Stream weekdays from 2-4pm to catch the show. March 2006 saw Dan go full circle when was invited to keep Kid Kenobi’s seat warm for a month at Triple J, and present the first hour of the show he was unearthed on in the first place: Mix Up. Apparently he did alright, so he was allowed back on air for three months while Kid Kenobi spent the Australian Winter in the European Summer. Visit the Mix Up home page for weekly tracklist info, live and weekly archived stream. Just to make sure he absolutely no time left whatsoever, in March 2006 Dan took up the role of A&R for Luke Chable’s record label, Trojan Records.
